America, Antarctica, Australia, Bertius/Hondius, 1618, America
Very beautiful antique map by Petrus Bertius of America. For the first time on a continental map the recent discovery of Hudson Bay was shown (Burden, pg.223). Topographical features are shown (many purely speculative, or mythical), and many known towns, cities, missions, & Indian villages are located. California is shown as a peninsula.
The northwest coast is shown oriented westward and then veering northeast - suggesting a Northwest Passage (also why the Hudson Bay is left open). A wonderful sea monster is found off the southeast coast of South America.
Original hand coloring (this was only done to a very limited number of these atlases).
Published by Hondius in Amsterdam in 1618 in a French edition of ´Géographie raccourcie par Pierre BERTIUS´.
Excellent condition. Original hand coloring (very rare, only a few copies were sold with hand coloring). Never folded. Reverse side text in French
