This very large 18th century geometric map of France was published by Cassini with the support of the Academy of Sciences. It shows the main network of triangles constructed from the Paris meridian, along the ocean coasts and on the borders. This triangulation network was designed to accurately measure the length and width of France, including the distances to notable objects and landmarks.
Started by Giovanni Cassini in the 1670s, this particular map is the product of three generations of work by the Cassini family and is considered to be the first published map of a country using modern cartographic methods.
